March 9th will see another Mama Popcorn night of delight, this time at the counting house, West Nicolson street. You know the score if you've seen us before - expect the unexpected and tighten your drawstrings for a pant-swinging extravaganza of big-mama proportions.

Doors 8.30pm, band on stage 9pm.

Gig

Mama Popcorn have a gig at the Counting House on Friday 9th March. Support to be confirmed - we'll possibly be supporting ourselves, as no-one else can be trusted to do the job. There'll be a DJ and the general party atmosphere will continue through until 1am. Tickets, when released, will be available by emailing one of the contacts on the left.

End of an era

Jess is now too pregnant to sing. and considering that she has the keys to the carpet shop it means that we have to move out. So, goodbye Jess, and goodbye carpet shop. Once you've rehearsed in a  carpet shop it's really difficult to rehearse anywhere else as you're a bit spoiled. Where else can you just curl up on a pile of Iranian rugs and have a snooze?

Jess, we hope your babies are healthy and beautiful.

Anyone know a good rehearsal space preferably with a load of soft furnishings?

alastair 'part-timer' gill - despite his impressive academic achievements alastair has shunned the world of intellectual discourse and instead opted for the simple life of goat-herding in the french alps. this means he is only able to feature as an occasional 'guest appearance' at mama popcorn events. however the hope that is that with a little more alpine exposure alastair will be in a position to introduce some exciting yodelling solos to mama p's already eclectic musical genre. watch this space.

• anne has started circuit training and is LOVING it.
• jess has lost all her hair as a result of experimental drug-taking.
• miz and tammy are seeing each other... or something like that.
• phil is finally seeing someone! (...about his 'condition')
• ben has started his teacher training and now only responds to 'mr. davies-jenkins'.
• dave has been working on a turkey farm or something.
• piers has been storming his way through the national sudoku championships.
• matt has not been copying dvds.
• jack took his grade three piano exam and passed - nice one!
• aileen has had great success at the fringe with her show 'anything you kazoo i kazoo better!'
• anna's recent behaviour has led to sedation and a strait jacket.
• al is turning 33 and beginning to feel twinges in his joints.
• nik has been living up to her name and is now barred from superdrug and TK Max.
• tess has taken up morris dancing and is thinking of going pro.
• an unfortunate episode this summer for maxine means she will now be singing bass.
• an even more unfortunate episode for schu means he will now be singing soprano.

An unbiased review

So some people say they felt the earth tremble, others say it shook and others report it friggin well started turning right to left ... the rumours circulating about the cosmic effect of Mama Popcorn at the Bongo Club last Saturday are escalating, but the truth is apparent: If you were there you'll know the futility of attempting to write about the event - no words could convey the beauty of the harmonies, the hot-diggedy-dogness of the beats or the lyricity of the lyrics. New heavenly plains were reached in distant worlds of groove; the crowd gasped in musical wonderment at the seamless blending of James Brown, Funkadelic and Stevie Wonder with the unlikely likes of Slim Shady and the Chilli Peppers ... all wrapped up and ribboned with some deliciously pure gospelly gospel.

The Mama-ship will be off touring distant galaxies over the summer months but watch this space come autumn-time and prepare your senses to once more be aroused by this sensational multiple-piece gospel-funk phenomenon.
