I've just been away for a few weeks, and I have returned to a smashed car window, a hole where there should be a car stereo, and a victim support letter from the West Yorkshire police. Actually the window was fine because my friends swept up the glass and arranged for it to be fixed, so I just had the hole to fill.
I went with my Dad to a secret warehouse in Hayes which we only found by asking the Asian guy in Currys where he would buy a car stereo from. The room was dark, with only the pulsating blue lights from rows of amps and bluetooth things to show the way to the counter. There was a pimped-up Mark I Golf on display with speakers the size of dustbin lids. Anyway. I now have a flash new model, with a removable anti-theft front, and a plug for my iPod. It is so loud that I can hear things in the boot rattling.
What is really annoying, and what caused the guy in the car stereo shop to froth and bubble with incredulous disbelief, is that the thief went to a lot of effort to steal a six-year-old generic Ford car stereo. It's big, bulky, not particularly good, and currently selling on eBay for just over a fiver.
I'm pretty sure that's not actually mine, but it could be. Why bother? It's bizarre. Unless they were actually just after my CD of High Violet, by The National, which was in the stereo at the time. I guess that would be worthwhile.

That's an hour at minimum wage, for 5 minutes work. When you do the sums it's worth nicking just about anything with a value of £1 or more.

Look at the winning bid - I bet it went for £50 or more. A couple of years ago, I had problems with my stereo, identical to yours, and looked into buying a replacement on eBay. Nothing went for less than £60 at the time.

I reckon you should've bought it and wired it up to see if your CD came out...
Then you'd know it was your and the polis could nick the perp!
(or maybe not).
Agree that it's more than a little odd.

After reading your blog Ian, I now feel a distinct lack of life experience. I'm going to have to go stereo shopping.
